Harris Sponsors SkillsUSA TX Cutting Contest

As part of the SkillsUSA Texas Skills Competition held in Corpus Christi, March 27-29, 2014, Harris sponsored a metal cutting contest.  Using a Harris Model 42-4 injector torch with 1lb PSI of propylene and 35lb PSI of oxygen, participants had to cut a 1" hole in a 4" wide x 1/2" thick piece of angle iron mild steel, then cut off the angle iron.  A test pipe was used after the hole cut to check for size.  If the hole was too small or too big, the participant was disqualified.

Geraldo Salas, a student at Del Rio High School in Del Rio, TX won by completing the task in 39 seconds.  Geraldo received a Harris Ironworker Kit for winning the contest.

The Del Rio team, under the direction of their instructor Tod Townsend, won the gold medal in the welding team fabrication competition and the silver medal in the welding speed skills contest, and will be heading to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference to be held June 23-27, 2014 in Kansas City.  Congratulations to Geraldo, Tod, and all the students for their achievements.

Harris is a proud sponsor of the HVAC/R Brazing Competition.  Lincoln Electric, Harris' parent company, is one of SkillsUSA's largest contributors, sponsoring events, providing equipment and utilizing employees as judges, instructors and support personnel.  The conference gives the opportunity for students from secondary, post-secondary and vocational training schools to engage with Harris and Lincoln Electric along with 1,100 other manufacturing leaders, trade associations, businesses and labor unions.
